Area Description: Mobile is the largest metropolitan area along the Gulf of Mexico between New Orleans and Tampa. New industry and jobs are on the rise. Airbus broke ground on a new $600M plane manufacturing facility in March 2013 which will employ 1,000 direct jobs. The plant is anticipated to create approximately 4,000 indirect jobs from Airbus suppliers. In 2010, ThyssenKrupp AG constructed a $5.2 billion steel mill in north Mobile County that is now producing carbon and stainless steel. The site has a current workforce of 1,700, and will eventually grow to 2,700 employees, and lead to an estimated 5,500 indirect jobs in the region. The Port of Mobile is the nation’s 7th largest full-service seaport handling in excess of 54 million tons annually. Late in 2010, the U.S. Navy awarded Austal USA a contract worth an estimated $3.5 billion to build up to 10 Littoral Combat Ships. The project will add 2,100 jobs to Austal’s workforce. Earlier that year, the Navy awarded Austal a $1.6 billion contract to build four Joint High Speed Vessels, resulting in the hiring of 800 employees. Forbes’ recently listed the city of Mobile as having the fastest projected rate of growth of any metropolitan area in the country, 34% between 2007 and 2012. Coastal Living Magazine named the city of Mobile as one of the top 10 winter getaway spots in the world. (January 2012). Alabama’s Tourism Department named Mobile’s Mardi Gras, with more than 1 million people in attendance, the most attended event in the state during 2011. (March 2012).
